European recording artists and performers call for fairness on term of protection
"Europe has always prided itself on being a champion of culture, yet the EU is lagging behind many other parts of the world when it comes to protecting its recordings. European artists, performers and producers are provided with a 50 year period of protection for their work to enable them to benefit from the recordings they have made. This is a much lower level of protection than many other countries around the world which provide for between 60 and 95 years' protection. At a time when the creative sector based on intellectual property generates an increasing percentage of GDP in the European Union, this lower level of protection compared to other international markets puts Europe at a competitive disadvantage."

Susan Boyle's performance viewed over 66 million times in one week
"#Susan Boyle is headed for the history books. The online video of Boyle's performance in the reality show "Britain's Got Talent" has set the record for the number of views in a week - and shows no sign of stopping. According to Visible Measures, which tracks videos from YouTube, MySpace and other video-sharing sites, Boyle's audition has generated 66.3 million views. On YouTube alone, it's been viewed more than 30 million times. The 7-minute video that was posted on YouTube last Saturday and then widely circulated online easily eclipsed more high-profile videos that have been around for months. Tina Fey's impersonation of Sarah Palin has clocked in 34.2 million views, said the folks at Visible Measures, while President Obama's victory speech on election night has generated 18.5 million views. In less than a week, Boyle topped them." - Washington Post

Philly Rap Label CEO gets life in prison
"Philadelphia record label owner Alton Coles, also known as "Ace Capone", was convicted under Pennsylvania's "kingpin" law and sentenced to life in prison on Thursday. In August of 2005 Coles was arrested and indicted for organizing a $25 million drug ring that stretched across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland, reports AllHipHop.com. During the seven-week trial prosecutors accused Coles and his affiliates of moving two metric tons of powdered cocaine and almost half a ton of crack between 1997 and 2005. Prosecutors believe that Coles opened a number businesses in efforts to portray legitimacy and conceal the true source of his earnings. The enterprises included Take Down Records, a day care center and an ice and water stand." - LiveSteevz

Songs soothe symptoms in heart disease patients
"If you have heart problems, you might want to plug in that iPod or pop in a CD of mellow songs. Hospital patients with coronary heart disease reduced their heart rates, breathing rate and blood pressure just by listening to #music, a Temple University review of 23 previous studies found. The report, published in the latest issue of The Cochrane Library, found that the soothing effects were greatest when these patients chose their own tunes. For example, patients' pulse rates fell by more beats per minute when they made the selections compared with those who listened to music selected by researchers." - USA Today

With economy stalling, more see used books, music as resources
"As the economic downturn lingers, people are turning to used book stores -- sellers as well as buyers. At Logos Books & Records in downtown Santa Cruz, #music buyer Warner Williams has seen people bring in entire collections to sell. Bookshop Santa Cruz has seen a dramatic increase in people selling and a new preference for cash over store credit, according to owner Casey Coonerty Protti. In Aptos, Bookworks co-owner Traci Fishburn reports "dipping our toes" into the used book market, prompted by donations by longtime patrons after the shop downsized in fall 2007. "Inexpensive entertainment, yet high quality," summed up Debbie Shayne, manager at Logos, which employs 25 to 30 people and has an inventory of 150,000 to 200,000 used books spread over two floors." - San Jose Mercury News

JDub label takes eclectic view of Jewish music
"Ask people for examples of Christian #music and they'll probably mention church hymns, Christmas songs or the band Creed. But Jewish tunes are harder to pin down. Many associate the music of the Chosen People with "Fiddler on the Roof" or Adam Sandler's "Chanukah Song." JDub Records is trying to change this perception. Founded in 2002, the label is best known for releasing Matisyahu's debut album and proving that a Hasidic hip-hop artist can appeal to nonreligious music fans. Even though the label hasn't signed another breakthrough artist, it continues to embrace its Jewish roots while reaching out to a broader audience" - Billboard

15M hits later, YouTube Symphony makes live debut
The YouTube Symphony got to Carnegie Hall. With 21st-century multimedia pizazz, the Web site's first orchestra dazzled the audience in the 118-year-old concert hall in its debut concert. As the orchestra played, musical notes literally streamed from the walls and moved along the cavernous ceiling. Some of the projections seemed to hang vertically as they emanated from the stage and over the audience. It was as if the producers were saying: "Classical #music is fun, too, and it's going to capture you." - AP

Susan Boyle Sings on Britain's Got Talent 2009
"American Idol" isn't the only launching pad for aspiring singers. Across the pond, "Britain's Got Talent" scored a huge boost in the Buzz after an unassuming contestant gave an amazing performance. Susan Boyle (remember that name) became a Web phenomenon after singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables. The performance brought the audience to its feet and left the judges (including Simon Cowell) either speechless or in tears. Before going on stage, Ms. Boyle admitted some self-deprecating facts about herself (she's never been kissed and lives alone with her cat, Pebbles). For those reasons and more, audiences were expecting the female William Hung. They were wrong. Lookups on the sudden star posted huge gains. A no-name just the other day, Ms. Boyle quickly surged into our top 5,000 overall searches. Blogs and gossip rags went wild. The Mirror jumped on the story, reporting that while Ms. Boyle thought she "looked like a garage" on TV, she received a standing ovation when she showed up at her local church. Other sources write that as a child, Ms. Boyle was the target of bullies because of a disability. But, with her newfound fame, she is getting the last laugh. In fact, she's already meeting with officials from Mr. Cowell's Sony BMG label. This may have been the first you've heard of her, but it certainly won't be the last

Kurt Cobain remembered 15 years after his death
"The park bench facing Lake Washington is covered with flowers, poems, a pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes and graffiti. "I miss your beautiful face and voice," one dedication reads. "Thank you for inspiring me," says another. "RIP Kurt." Fifteen years ago Wednesday, at a house adjacent to the park, Kurt Cobain's dead body was discovered by an electrician. The Nirvana frontman, 27, had committed suicide, police later ruled, killing himself with a shotgun while high on heroin and pills. His death ended a battle with hard drugs and added Cobain to a long list of legendary musicians, such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, whose careers were cut short by their addictions. Cobain's ashes were reportedly scattered in a Washington state river and a New York Buddhist temple. Nirvana band mates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl eventually formed other bands. Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, stayed in the limelight with an acting career and legal problems surrounding her own drug problems. Frances Bean, the couple's daughter, has largely lived outside the public eye. - CNN

Allow Web coverage of music-sharing suit, lawyer urges court
"A Harvard Law School professor who is defending a Boston University student accused of downloading #music illegally urged a federal appeals court panel yesterday to allow live Internet coverage of a hearing in the lawsuit, something that has never happened in a federal trial court in Massachusetts. Charles R. Nesson told a three-member panel of the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, in Boston, that a gavel-to-gavel webcast of an upcoming hearing in the suit by the Recording Industry Association of America against Joel Tenenbaum would be "an opportunity for the world to see what the recording industry is doing to him." Tenenbaum, a 25-year-old student seeking a doctorate in physics, clicked seven times on his computer to download seven songs and found himself being sued for thousands of dollars by the recording industry, said Nesson." - Boston.com

YouTube now pulls music videos out of Germany
"#YouTube has pulled the plug on #music videos in Germany as Western Europe starts to look like a hostile environment for Web music services. A YouTube spokesman confirmed that YouTube is no longer playing music videos belonging to the largest music labels after talks with Germany's biggest royalty collections group, GEMA, broke down. The conflict is almost identical to YouTube's spat with a royalty group in the United Kingdom, but with one important twist. According to YouTube, GEMA is asking for royalty rates that are 50 times higher than those asked for by PRS, the British organization, and YouTube argues those are even too high." - cnet

McCartney says meditation helped stabilize Beatles
"The surviving members of the #Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, will perform at a concert on Saturday to raise funds to help children learn a meditation technique McCartney said helped stabilize the band at the height of its fame. McCartney and Starr will perform separate sets at the "Change Begins Within" concert for the David Lynch Foundation, which helps people learn Transcendental Meditation. The Beatles helped popularize Transcendental Meditation - described as a simple mental technique that combats stress - in 1967 when they sought spiritual guidance from an Indian guru, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi."
