Arcade Fire win Canadian 'Mercury Prize'

Arcade Fire have won Canada's equivalent of the Mercury Prize for their third album The Suburbs. The Montreal rockers, who have already won two Brits this year, accepted the Polaris Award and a cheque for $30,000 (£19,000). The Beatles banned segregated audiences, contract shows

The Beatles showed their support for the US civil rights movement by refusing to play in front of segregated audiences, a contract shows. The document, which is to be auctioned next week, relates a 1965 concert at the Cow Palace in California. Signed by manager Brian Epstein, it specifies that The Beatles "not be required to perform in front of a segregated audience". The agreement also guarantees the band payment of $40,000 (£25,338)

Jessie J and Adele leads Q Awards shortlist (UK)

Jessie J, Adele and Arctic Monkeys lead the charge at this year's Q Awards, with three nominations apiece. Coldplay, Ed Sheeran and Mercury Prize-winner PJ Harvey are among the names who are up for two prizes. In the prestigious best act in the world today category, Muse, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Arcade Fire and U2 are set to compete. The winners will be announced on 24 October at a ceremony at The Grosvenor House Hotel in London

EU extends copyright term to 70 years

The European Union has extended the term of copyright protection offered to sound recordings from 50 to 70 years, following a prolonged campaign from the music industry. The legislation, which was first proposed by the European Commission in 2008 and voted on by the European Parliament in April 2009, was passed today (Sept. 12) by the EU Council of Ministers in Brussels. The new regulations will be implemented by EU Member State Governments within the next two years

English singer-songwriter P.J. Harvey won a second Mercury award Tuesday, 10 years after the 2001 terrorist attacks kept her from receiving her first in person.
