Davy Jones of The Monkees dies aged 66

Davy Jones, Manchester-born lead singer with 60s band The Monkees, has died aged 66, his publicist has confirmed. He died in his sleep at his home in Florida. His publicist, Deborah Robicheau, said he had a massive heart attack

V Festival lines up Stone Roses

The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and The Killers have been announced as the headline acts at this year's V Festival. Noel Gallagher and his band the High Flying Birds have also been added to the bill, along with Sir Tom Jones, Snow Patrol and Ed Sheeran. Organisers said more acts would be announced at a later date. The event, now in its 17th year, takes place on 18 and 19 August in Chelmsford and Staffordshire

Opera star Elizabeth Connell dies at 65

Opera star Elizabeth Connell, who performed at such leading opera houses as the Royal Opera House and La Scala, has died at the age of 65. The South-African born singer moved to London in 1970 and made her debut at Ireland's Wexford Festival in 1972. Originally a mezzo soprano, she drew acclaim for her roles in the works of such opera giants as Verdi and Wagner. Connell switched to soprano in 1983. She spent five years attached to the English National Opera from 1975. Connell then became a freelance artist with the major opera houses. She died on 18 February at her home in Richmond, south-west London and is survived by several siblings

Blur to headline Olympics closing show

Blur will headline a show in London's Hyde Park to celebrate the end of the Olympic Games later this year. The band will be joined by New Order and The Specials at the ticketed concert on 12 August, to coincide with the Olympics closing ceremony

MC5 bassist Michael Davis dies aged 68

Michael Davis, bass player with US rock band MC5, has died of liver failure aged 68, his wife has announced. Davis died at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, California, on Friday following a month of treatment for liver disease, said Angela Davis

Whitney Houston, US singer and actress, dies aged 48

American singer and actress Whitney Houston has died in Los Angeles at the age of 48. Police said she died in her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where she had been staying as a guest. Houston was one of the most celebrated female singers of all time, with hits including I Will Always Love You and Saving All My Love For You. But her later career was overshadowed by substance abuse and her turbulent marriage to singer Bobby Brown
