James Blunt tops UK sales chart for decade

James Blunt's debut album "Back To Bedlam" is the biggest U.K. seller of the decade, according to the Official Charts Company. Dido's debut "No Angel" and Amy Winehouse's Grammy-winning smash "Back to Black" followed. Dido also made No. 7 with "Life For Rent." Leona Lewis' debut "Spirit" came in at No. 4, ahead of David Gray's 1998 release "White Ladder. Rounding out the list were the Beatles' "1" at No. 6, Coldplay's "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" at No. 8, the Scissor Sisters' self-titled debut at No. 9, and Take That's "Beautiful World" at No. 10. Blunt's "Back To Bedlam" did not reach the U.K. albums chart when it was first released in 2004 -- it sold just 482 copies in its first week. It eventually charted thanks to heavy radio rotation for the single "You're Beautiful," and ended up selling more than 3.1 million copies.

Steeleye Span's Tim Hart dies at age 61

Tim Hart, one of the founder members of British folk-rock group Steeleye Span, has died of lung cancer, the band's record company said on Wednesday. Hart, 61, died on Dec 24 in the home he had made in Spain's Canary Islands after retiring from the music scene in the 1980s, John Dagnell, managing director of independent label Park Records in England told Reuters. "Tim died on Christmas Eve. It is a sad loss. It came as a shock to us as we did not realise his illness was so far advanced," Dagnell said. Hart, who had devoted the latter part of his life to photography, was diagnosed with lung cancer a year ago. Steeleye Span, best known for the hit records "All Around My Hat" and "Gaudete", was formed in 1969 when Hart and singer Maddy Prior teamed up with ex-Fairport Convention bass player Ashley Hutchings

John Lennon's biopic Nowhere Boy released

"Biopic Nowhere Boy is released on Boxing Day. It is the story of the Beatles star's early life. He was brought up in Liverpool by his formidable aunt Mimi after being given up by his spirited mother, Julia. Artist-turned-director Sam Taylor-Wood admits it is a complex story that needed to be handled with care. "What I did do was write to people that mattered, I felt, and just say I'm making this film if you want input," she said. One person who did get in contact was Lennon's widow Yoko Ono"

Cuca Records leaves a Sauk City legacy

"In rock and roll lore, Sauk City may not carry the same cachet as Liverpool or New York City, but during the '60s and early '70s a small, independent record label earned the village a low-watt prestige for good music that continues to shine 30 years after artists stopped flocking here to cut records. James Kirchstein, the founder of Cuca Records, still remembers the day in 1972 when David Bowie called wanting to book Cuca's studio at 123 Water St."

Musicians find own way as labels struggle

"Singer Amy Correia has made two critically acclaimed albums, but for her next record she's changing her tune, reports CBS News Business Correspondent Anthony Mason. "I'm making this hopefully with the help of fans as opposed to a record label," Correia told an audience one night. In the brutal shakeout in the music business, Correia, like so many artists, was dropped by her label. So the 41-year-old singer turned to her most important asset: her fans"

Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child has 'best guitar riff'

Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child has been named the greatest guitar riff of all time, 41 years after it was recorded, in a poll by website Music Radar. It beat Guns N' Roses song Sweet Child O' Mine, which came second in the poll. Music Radar's editor, Mike Goldsmith, called Hendrix the "undisputed heavyweight champion of rock guitar". Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love, Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water and Layla by Derek and the Dominos also featured in the top five. Riffs from older songs seem to be more popular, as only two from the past decade made it into the top 20

Best of Twitter tunes album released

"The tunes may be a little avant-garde for most tastes. They're unlikely to give Britney Spears and Beyoncé a run for their money, but are impressive achievements all the same. Musical twitterers have found a way to condense entire compositions to fit in single, 140-character tweets. The trend started earlier this year when Dan Stowell, a composer and computer scientist at Queen Mary, University of London, encoded the sound of waves crashing on the shore using the programming language SuperCollider and then tweeted the results. Other users of the micro-blogging site responded by devising and posting their own compositions. Now a free to download, best-of album of 22 #Twitter tunes has been released, entitled sc140" - New Scientist

MySpace Music launches charts

From MySpace Blog: "Every artist aspires to be #1. The music platform on MySpace was built on the belief that if you provide artists with the right tools to properly market themselves then the opportunities are endless -and we understood from the very beginning that data would be one of the most important tools we could offer. Over these past few months we've gone under the hood to take a closer look at the intelligence underlining the MySpace Music platform and we've been focused on making it cleaner, more meaningful and more accessible to artists. With last month's beta launch of our new Artist Dashboard we now provide a comprehensive analytics tool to help give artists and labels useful intelligence about what's resonating with fans and how their content is being socialized throughout MySpace. Continuing that momentum, today marks the beta launch of MySpace Music Charts - a new global product that creates multiple front doors into the discovery of popular music content across all genres. Whether you're a hip hop act, an unsigned progressive rock band or the next electronica sensation in Germany - there's a chart for that"

Copyright time bomb set to disrupt music, publishing industries

"The late ’70s, when punk exploded and disco imploded, were tumultuous years for the music industry. A time bomb embedded in legislation from that era, the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976, could bring another round of tumult to the business, due to provisions that allow authors or their heirs to terminate copyright grants - or at the very least renegotiate much sweeter deals by threatening to do so. At a time when record labels and, to a lesser extent, music publishers, find themselves in the midst of an unprecedented contraction, the last thing they need is to start losing valuable copyrights to '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s music, much of which still sells as well or better than more recently released fare. Nonetheless, the wheels are already in motion" - Wired

Paul McCartney named recipient of Third Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington today named music legend Paul McCartney as the recipient of the third Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. An all-star tribute concert is planned for spring 2010. "As a great admirer of the Gershwins’ songs, I am highly honored to be given the Gershwin Prize by such a great institution as the Library of Congress," McCartney said. The prize commemorates George and Ira Gershwin, the legendary American songwriting team whose extensive manuscript collections reside in the Library of Congress. The prize is awarded to musicians whose lifetime contributions in the field of popular song exemplify the standard of excellence associated with the Gershwins. The Gershwin Prize is also meant to draw attention to the musical collections in the Library of Congress, especially the vast popular-music collection, and to encourage students, teachers, scholars and researchers to use this free public resource in their scholarly investigations.

Universal / TuneCore's Indie Project

"The road to indie artist fame and fortune got a fast lane this week with the launch of four new Web sites designed to aid up-and-coming artists distribute their music as well as attract the attention of recording industry players. The new sites are the latest developments resulting from the relationship between major label Universal Music Group and music distributor TuneCore, which distributes, for a fee, indie artists' music to online music services. The sites - UniMoDigitalDistribution.com, InterscopeDigitalDistribution.com, Republicdd.com and IDJFirstLook.com - have similar functions in that they enable new artists, through TuneCore, to distribute their music to online stores such as iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon MP3, Shockhound, eMusic and Napster." - Pollstar

Officials to restore birthplace of Robert Johnson

Officials to restore birthplace of Robert JohnsonThe mystery surrounding bluesman Robert Johnson's life and death feeds the lingering fascination with his work. There's the myth he sold his soul to the devil to create his haunting guitar intonations. There's the dispute over where he died after his alleged poisoning by a jealous man in 1938. Three different markers claim to be the site of his demise. His birthplace, however, has been verified. The seminal bluesman came into the world in 1911 in a well-crafted home built by his stepfather in the Mississippi town of Hazlehurst. Now, 71 years after his death, local officials want to restore the home in hopes of drawing Johnson fans and their tourism dollars to Copiah County, about 100 miles from the Delta region that most bluesmen called home

SharetheMusic

"ShareTheMusic.com is an innovative and unique project since it does not distribute music files but it acts as a middleman among those who are willing to share their music - by enabling other Internet users to listen to it. People having a particular piece of music on their hard disk can broadcast it to only one listener at a time, and it cannot be copied by saving to the disk of another user. Owing to this, the copyright of authors, performers and producers is observed.

Illegal downloaders 'spend the most on music', says poll (UK)

"People who illegally download music from the internet also spend more money on music than anyone else, according to a new study. The survey, published today, found that those who admit illegally downloading music spent an average of £77 a year on music – £33 more than those who claim that they never download music dishonestly. The findings suggest that plans by the Secretary of State for Business, Peter Mandelson, to crack down on illegal downloaders by threatening to cut their internet connections with a "three strikes and you're out" rule could harm the music industry by punishing its core customers. An estimated seven million UK users download files illegally every year. The record industry's trade association, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), believes this copyright infringement will cost the industry £200m this year. The poll, which surveyed 1,000 16- to 50-year-olds with internet access, found that one in 10 people admit to downloading music illegally"

Making search more musical - Official Google Blog

Making search more musical - Official Google Blog: "Every day we get millions of search queries about music. You want to know more about your favorite artists, find that new album or iconic song or figure out the name of that tune stuck in your head. In fact, according to Insights for Search, two of the top 10 queries in the U.S. are music-related. But often, if your answer is in a song, it can take a while to get there. We call this "time to result" - and we're always looking for ways to reduce it. Today, we're rolling out a search feature that does just that by enabling you to search and more easily discover millions of songs, all via a simple Google web search. If you're searching for music, "time to result" is really "time to music." Now, when you enter a music-related query - like the name of a song, artist or album - your search results will include links to an audio preview of those songs provided by our music search partners MySpace (which just acquired iLike) or Lala. When you click the result you'll be able to listen to an audio preview of the song directly from one of those partners" Google says the music search features will be rolling out 'gradually to users across the U.S. over the next day.'
