Beatles drummer audition letter to go under hammer

A handwritten letter from Sir Paul McCartney inviting a mystery drummer to audition for the Beatles is to go under the hammer in London next month. The 1960 letter offers the audition on condition the drummer be available for a two-month trip to Hamburg, Germany. Pete Best was the group's drummer at the time, who was replaced by Ringo Starr two years later. Christie's said the letter was expected to fetch up to £9,000 ($14,000) at the auction on 15 November. Dated 12 August 1960, the letter was discovered inside a book by an anonymous collector at a car boot sale in Bootle, Liverpool

Michael Winterbottom to direct Beatles film

24 Hour Party People film-maker Michael Winterbottom will direct The Longest Cocktail Party, a film about Beatles label Apple, its producer has said. Andrew Eaton, co-founder of Revolution Films with Winterbottom, also told The Playlist blog that Peep Show creator Jesse Armstrong had written the script. The film, based on Apple worker Richard DiLello's book, is co-produced with Liam Gallagher's film company

Folk musician Bert Jansch dies aged 67

Scottish folk musician Bert Jansch, a founding member of the band Pentangle and a well-known guitarist in his own right, has died at the age of 67. Jansch, who had cancer, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning at a hospice in Hampstead, north London. Born in Glasgow in 1943, the musician recorded his first album in 1965 and his last, The Black Swan, in 2006
