Beck: The Information

On The Information, Beck Hansen is seriously bummed out. Not that he sounds it as much as he did on 2002's laconic, Fred Neil-worshipping Sea Change. Technology and stuff, and the way it gets in the way of human interaction, is the subtext if not the full-on concept at play here. Recorded with art-rock anal-retentive Nigel Goodrich at the helm, work began on this album not long after Sea Change but was shelved for a few years while Mr. Hansen made 2005's Guero with the Dust Brothers. Unsurprisingly, it sounds a bit like both of those. The trappings of minimalist pop, fuzzy folk, click-hop, hip-hop, baroque psychedelia, and funky pop are to be found on this endearing release. Like Jean Cocteau or David Bowie, Beck is an artistic chameleon whose greatest gift is knowing which artists to borrow from, and when. The cover artwork consists of stickers that you can arrange however you like, which perhaps appeals too much to your own nostalgic/retro, "Trapper Keeper" sensibilities. And yet, it's kind of awesome, something you can't believe has never been done before. Much like the album it adorns. -- Mike McGonigal

The Killers: Sam's Town

The Killers five-million-selling debut, 2004's Hot Fuss, saw the stylish Las Vegas quartet mining inspiration from its favorite '80s British acts Duran Duran, the Cure, and the Smiths. On its follow-up, the group turns its focus homeward. First there's the album title, Sam's Town, which pays tribute to the old-school local casino where the band got its start. Then there's the music inside, a collection of windswept rockers in the vein of Bruce Springsteen that leave the indie-disco vibe of "Mr. Brightside" in the desert dust. Working with producers Alan Moulder and Flood (best known for their work with U2, Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails), everything here sounds bigger and shinier, with full-blown strings and choirs coloring epics like "When You Were Young" and "The River Is Wild." Coming soon to a stadium near you. --Aidin Vaziri

Evanescence: The Open Door

There's nothing like a breakup to focus your muse. This follow-up to the stunning, multi-platinum Fallen was penned as singer Amy Lee's troubled romance with band mate Ben Moody was spiraling out of control, impelling her to craft an anxious record full of recriminations, revelation, and self-flagellation, as she questioned everything that kept her whole. It's a fascinating journey for the listener as she ventures into her own personal heart of darkness, her stricken, perfect voice suspended on an unsteady precipice between breakdown and breakthrough. Despite the loss of two members, including guitarist Moody who left mid-tour in 2003, the album has a maturity, sophistication, and a singular vision that wasn't found in their earlier work. Stately and as exotic as Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti, with its intricate instrumentation, disturbing imagery, and disembodied chorus, The Open Door shows exactly what this band is capable of. "You Belong to Me," is a goth-y alternative to "Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," equally anthemic, but with much more grit and pain. --Jaan Uhelszki

Natalie MacMaster: Yours Truly

Though the music of Canadian fiddler Natalie MacMaster remains rooted in her native Cape Breton, it continues to branch in some surprising directions. No purist, MacMaster employs an aggressive guitar and rhythm section, along with mini-Moog and electric pipes on "Matt & Nat's," while the jazzy intro to the "Flea as a Bird" medley seems to channel the style of Stephane Grappelli

Lennon cast as anti-war hero in new documentary

U.S. conservatives were outraged when country music band the Dixie Chicks criticized President George W. Bush. But a new documentary about John Lennon and his run-in with the Nixon administration over the Vietnam war suggests Bush got off lightly. David Leaf's "The U.S. vs. John Lennon," screened at the Venice Film Festival earlier this week, uses footage not seen before and news clips aired for the first time in decades. Lennon's widow Yoko Ono allowed Leaf and co-director John Scheinfeld to use her library of images and the former Beatle's music in a 100-minute documentary that portrays a turbulent United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s

The Truants

The Truants formed in Jackson, Ohio in 1964. As young teenagers, they played high school parties, teen dances, Jr. /Sr. proms, supermarket openings, fashion shows, community events and festivals. Like many fledgling garage bands of the day, they copied what they heard on the radio: The Kingsmen, The Rolling Stones, Johnny Rivers, and The Ventures, country music, folk music and R&B. After their appearance on the TV program, Let's Dance in Huntington, WV they quickly became one of the most popular bands playing in the 1960's. This CD is an opportunity for you to relive the good old days of that fabulous era of music that was the 1960's

Interscope Records has struck a deal with Hasbro, the toy maker, to create a line of fashion dolls modeled on the Pussycat Dolls. The toy line, which aims to mimic the act's playfully risqué style, is expected to be on sale by this year's holiday season. Michael Jackson is to release his first album since 2001 on a record label based in Bahrain. The singer has settled down in the kingdom and is reportedly close to the Prince of the country. Sometime ago his publicists had confirmed that Jacko was planning to permanently settle in the Gulf State. The record label on which he is to bring out his new album is called Two Seas Records and is owned by the country's royal family member Abdulla Hamad Al-Khalifa

Neil Young - "Let's Impeach the President"

Neil Young's 1989 anthem "Rockin' in the Free World" was scathingly critical of the social policies of then-president George Bush. Now the rock icon has found himself a new target: Bush's son. In a ticker on his official Website, Young has announced plans to release Living With War, a anti-war album addressing the conflict in Iraq which he recorded earlier this month in three short days. The album, being distributed by Warner/Reprise, takes sharp aim at the administration of President George W. Bush with the scathing tune, "Let's Impeach the President."

Stony Plain Records celebrates 30 years

Industry folk - along with Macleans magazine - call Holger Petersen's record label "the best small label in North America." It's the kind of plaudit that makes Petersen blush. The fact is, says Petersen, without financial whiz Alvin Jahns, Stony Plain Records would've folded up tent a long time ago, joining the dozens of blues labels that started with intent of supporting the genre, and not the bottom line. "Alvin never gets the credit that he should," says Petersen of his partner and financial officer. "But the reality is, we could've sunk several times without his financial leadership." Instead, Stony Plain is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a star-studded compilation that includes roots, blues and a DVD
