International income from British music doubles in the last decade

PRS for Music has announced that British music abroad is so popular that revenue earned from its use has doubled since 2002. During 2011, UK songwriters and composers earned £187.7m globally, up 10.6% on 2010 (£169.6m). The organisation represents 90,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers, collecting royalties from 150 territories around the world. Growth of £100m in international royalties since 2002 is attributed to both the widespread consumption of British music and improved licensing of its use and efficiency of distribution around the world. Due to the success of its music creators, the UK is one of only three countries in the world that is a net exporter of music

50 years of James Bond in music

Few characters in the history of cinema, if any, are more iconic than Ian Fleming's debonair super-spy, James Bond; few, too, can boast of any comparison to the equally iconic music which accompanies the intrepid agent 007's exploits. Since the series' beginning, the Bond films have been marked by exceptional music, including contributions from Paul McCartney, Shirley Bassey, Louis Armstrong and Madonna, and, of course, John Barry's instantly recognizable recording of Monty Norman's "James Bond Theme." (Adele will sing the theme for the 23rd film, Skyfall, which releases in the United Kingdom on 26 October and in the United States on 9 November.)

The Beatles begin, Friday, 5 October 1962

The Beatles' dream of releasing a record came to fruition fifty years ago when Parlophone issued the band's first disc, "Love Me Do." That night, EMI played the song on its own London-produced weekly radio program Friday Spectacular, broadcast on Radio Luxembourg. In the Beatles' Anthology, George Harrison recalled that, "First hearing 'Love Me Do' on the radio sent me shivery all over. It was the best buzz of all time." But records only become hits through marketing, and manager Brian Epstein soon learnt that for significant promotion he could not rely on others. He would need to develop a different strategy

The Tower Records Project

"No music, no life." With that statement, Tower Records declared itself more than just a music store. From its founding in 1960 until its closure in 2006, Tower was a gathering place, a library, a barometer of cultural trends and one-time icon of the U.S. retail market. Ultimately, the Tower Records business model - large stores with deep music catalogs - couldn't compete in the age of digital downloads and discount retailers. But the spirit and history of this pioneering music store can live on. In fact, an effort to preserve the Tower experience is currently underway in Sacramento, California, the birthplace of Tower Records. In 2009, founder Russ Solomon donated over 200 boxes of Tower-related history - artwork, photographs, memorabilia, awards, business records and correspondence, office furnishings and even the neon signs from the first stand-alone store - to the Center for Sacramento History. The Tower Records Project, a campaign to fund the preservation of Russ' gift and make it publicly available, has kicked off
