"In his near 40-year career as rock'n'roll's greatest guitar gunslinger, Keith Richards has been addicted to many substances. One can only imagine the unholy reaction should you cross him and make a dash for that bulging, dangerous stash from under his twitching nostrils. Well, today it has emerged that there is one thing he is more protective over than the many forms of dope still shooting around his system. Namely, shepherds pie." - Yahoo

Indie favourites to headline Reading
"This year's Reading and Leeds #music festival headliners have been announced and promoters have gone with a distinctly indie flavour. Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead and Kings of Leon are set for top billing at the three-day festival which usually reserves one headline spot for a big heavy-metal act. Last year, for example, saw metal gods Metallica given a place in the headliner trinity, and previous years have also witnessed Iron Maiden and Linkin Park play last on one of the days. This year's lean towards indie bands pervades throughout the line-up: Maximo Park, Ian Brown, Bloc Party, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, Kaiser Chiefs and Placebo have all confirmed their participation. Dance pioneers the Prodigy, whose latest album is titled Invaders Must Die, will also be on the main stage at both sites." - Yahoo

Chamber music society plans eclectic 2009-10 program
The Chamber #Music Society of Detroit will welcome back several old friends in the 2009-10 season, along with a fast-rising young pianist. And one beloved show business veteran is making his highly unusual debut on a chamber music series. Can you say Alan Alda? The actor, memoirist and all-around Renaissance man will join violinist Arnold Steinhardt for a program on March 20, 2010, celebrating Bach's "Chaconne," the Olympian final movement of the composer's Partita for Solo Violin in D Minor. Steinhardt, who has written movingly about the piece in his book "Violin Dreams," will be joined on stage by Alda for a discussion about Bach's piece, artistic development and issues that transcend genres of music, stage and screen performance. Steinhardt will perform the "Chaconne" and complementary music by Bach and perhaps others. freep.com

The Filter introduces The Feed
"We've just slapped up a bit of a refresh to TheFilter.com, and we'd like to run you through why we've decided to do this. When we launched last year, our aim was to be the home of recommendations on the web - so we recommended #music and movies to you on your homepage. However, the world/Internet is moving on and there's lots more content out there than just albums and movies. So, we've tweaked our goalposts a bit and now want to filter the whole of the web for you - to find the entertainment (and relevant bits of information related to the entertainment) that you'll love. The very first iteration of this process is up now on The Filter. If you log-in you'll see a feed which contains news stories, reviews and recommendations - all based on your tastes (the items in your taste cloud). In the coming months we'll be adding lots and lots of great content to this feed, such as Tweets from your favourite artists/movie stars, the best videos, gig recommendations, concerts from photos - you name it, it will go into your feed. We'll also be tidying up the design considerably (there's even rumours that those floor tiles will go soon!)" - The Filter Blog

US group re-creates Nazi death camp orchestra
"When Gustav Mahler's niece greeted new arrivals at a Nazi death camp, she knew that any woman who stepped off the train with a musical instrument had a chance to live. Women in Alma Rose's orchestra were forced to entertain SS officers at the Birkenau concentration camp. All the women survived - except Rose. Now, an American chorus and orchestra is paying tribute to those musicians with concerts in the U.S. and Germany titled "Music in Desperate Times: Remembering The Women's Orchestra of Birkenau." On Saturday, Ars Choralis will play at Manhattan's Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, whose Episcopal bishop had spoken against the persecution of Jews in Europe already in 1933" AP

Temptations drummer Uriel Jones dies aged 74
Drummer Uriel Jones, the last surviving member of the Motown session band the Funk Brothers, has died in Michigan. The drummer, 74, passed away in hospital after suffering complications from a heart attack. His sister-in-law Leslie Coleman said the drummer's health had recently been improving since he was taken ill in February. Jones was perhaps best known for his work with Marvin Gaye and The Temptations, with whom him recorded the tracks 'I Can't Get Next To You' and 'Cloud Nine'. The Funk Brothers' Motown sounds lead them to tour the world together. The band also received two Grammy awards. Jones is survived by his wife and three children - Gigwise

Sponsor Jill Sobule's album, get a spot on it
#music - "Asking fans for $75,000 to fund your next record takes a lot of chutzpah. Getting them to meet the goal in 53 days takes a lot of charm. Singer-songwriter Jill Sobule has both in spades. Before Katy Perry topped the charts with her sassy single, "I Kissed a Girl," Sobule scored a Top 20 hit with a song of the same name back in 1995. Since then, she's been on four record labels and has seen some modest success -- mostly recently as a songwriter/composer for the Nickelodeon series, "Unfabulous." These days, Sobule is a free agent. Translated, that means the 40-something entertainer must now think of creative ways to make ends meet and pay for her artistic endeavors" - CNN

Real Ones live in the Arctic: "Here Comes the Sun"
"The day after our gig at Solfestuken (the celebration of the return of the sun) in Longyearbyen, Svalbard we took off into the arctic with the risk of freezing to death or getting eaten by polar bears. If that had happened, this video of the appropriate Beatles song "Here Comes the Sun" would have been our last recording. As you can see we were lucky with the weather (first day of sunshine since October and only minus 15 degrees celcius) and we made it back. Longyearbyen is the northern most city in the world, situated on the islands of Svalbard, north of mainland Norway. Only 1200 km from the North Pole, at 78* North. It is dark there from October to March and midnight sun from April to September"

British Library's Archival Sound Recordings project now has 1,000 classical music recordings
The British Library's Archival Sound Recordings project now has 1,000 classical music recordings online. The recordings include previously unheard concertos and sinfoniettas from composers such as Bach, as well as orchestral suites and concerti by Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms. The recordings are available to visitors to the British Library reading rooms and can also be accessed by the public at home. However, music can only be streamed rather than downloaded. Celia Duffy, head of research at the National Centre for Research in the Performing Arts, Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama said: 'Digital collections, such as Archival Sound Recordings, have enormous potential for researchers and students. By placing previously inaccessible archives online, they create the potential for new fields of cross-disciplinary research, reflecting the social, cultural, technological and political changes that have shaped contemporary society.'

Willie King dies at 65 (USA)
World renowned Pickens County blues musician Willie King died of a heart attack Sunday near his home in Old Memphis. He was 65. King, whose Freedom Creek Festival has attracted top blues musicians and bands since 1997 when he started the two day festival on his farm near the Mississippi state line, first came to prominence outside West Alabama with his critically-acclaimed 2000 CD 'Freedom Creek' on the Rooster Blues Record. With a voice reminiscent at times of Howlin' Wolf and a style similar to John Lee Hooker's, King also brought an understanding of history and contemporary subject matter to the forefront with songs like 'Second Coming,' which invoked both abolitionist John Brown and Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King.
Island 50 Festival
"2009 is the 50th anniversary of the founding of Island Records, arguably the most prestigious record label in the history of British music. To mark this milestone the label is collaborating with Island founder Chris Blackwell to arrange the Island 50 festival. Chris Blackwell founded the Island label in Kingston, Jamaica in 1959 with capital of just £1000. Relocating to London in the early 60s Blackwell built the most diverse and enviable back catalogue of any independent record label in history. From Island's early Jamaican roots in ska and rock-steady, through the label's expansion to become the cutting edge of progressive rock in the late 60s, and then on to the signing of such international superstars as Bob Marley and U2, Blackwell brought to Island a unique vision and passion which still informs the label's approach to this day"

"Outside of seeing music live, music fans and bands are limited to a one-dimensional and flat experience. On Uncensored Interview, your favorite bands and artists speak directly to you via candid conversations that cover everything from the topical to the personal to the frivolous and absurd. UI is there to direct the conversation down interesting topical paths that reflect its mission to find out what really makes musicians tick. We produce the videos that bridge the gap between bands and their audience."

YouTube, Universal Music discuss alliance
"Google Inc.'s YouTube and Universal Music Group are discussing a partnership under which YouTube would build a new hub for music videos. YouTube would also provide technology and advertising-sales support to help distribute Universal's video content to other Web sites, people familiar with the matter say. Financial details of the arrangement - which is in negotiations and could still fall apart - couldn't be learned. But the partnership would represent YouTube's stepped-up efforts to lure premium content in order to sell more, higher-priced ads." - WSJ

"Iran’s Symphony" is an excavation in history of Iranian music: filmmaker
Documentary filmmaker Vahid Musaian regards his doc "Iran's Symphony," an excavation in the history of the music of Iran. "Music was one of my interests for many years, and I have produced many movies on music, but 'Iran’s Symphony' was a very special experience for me due to the vast research it required," Musaian told MNA. "The last scenes of the documentary end with the performance of the symphony orchestra, and then the movie will enter its post-production stage where Fereydun Shahbazian will work on its soundtracks," Musaian remarked. "I have conducted a great deal of research on traditional music of Iran and would like to show it, but I have not decided about the timing of its screening yet. I am extremely hope that it would be attractive for the audience," he added. "Iran's Symphony" narrates the efforts of a composer who tries to document melodies from various regions of the country. He travels to different places and holds talks with renowned musicians in each region and records their music. Then, he leaves this precious collection for future generations of musicians. Cinematographer Nader Masumi and sound recorder Maziar Sheikh-Mahbubi are collaborating with Musaian and the Experimental and Documentary Film Center (EDFC) as producers of the film. "The Bright House", "The Earrings", "The Lost Land", and "Silence of Sea" are some of Musaian's productions.

This year's Voodoo music fest in New Orleans will fall on Halloween
The Voodoo Experience, a music festival that in its 10-year history has landed Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne, R.E.M., Joss Stone and hundreds of other acts, will fall this year on the same holiday it was launched, Halloween. Voodoo is said by its organizers to be inspired as much by the magic and mystery of New Orleans as its eclectic mix of music, which is what makes Halloween a perfect fit for the festival. "People seem to embrace the Voodoo and New Orleans spirit a little more when they come to the festival in various forms of costume and disguise," said festival founder Stephen Rehage, who also produces the event. Voodoo's debut occurred on the Halloween weekend in 1999, but it has coincided with the holiday only one other time since. This year it is scheduled to run Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
