"Katy Perry has slammed her record label for trying to convince her to make her music more family friendly. The California Gurls singer claimed Capitol tried to persuade her against including certain tracks on the final tracklisting for her forthcoming album Teenage Dream, for fear they were too controversial"

A New Radio Station for London: Ronnie Scotts FM
London's favourite jazz club is turning a rather splendid 50 this year, and they have all sorts planned by way of celebration. Londonist conducted a spontaneous poll recently, and was quite scandalised by the percentage of Londoners who not only haven't visited the club, but are barely aware of its existence. At the Frith Street venue itself there are two weeks of very British sounds, reflecting the early days at Ronnie Scotts when musicians from abroad were not permitted to play. We are torn between the fun of the London Improvisers Orchestra and the jazzamatazz of the Laurence Cottle Big Band - but there are plenty of other acts to check out. There is also a photography competition, dear Flickr friends: the club is selecting a different house photographer each night - e-mail perry@ronniescotts.co.uk to apply. And then there's their new radio station: for two weeks from roundabout now you can catch them at 96.3 FM, and thereafter on-line

Beatles for sale – well their Abbey Road piano anyway
It may be covered in coffees stains and cigarette burns, but a battered old upright piano is likely to fetch £150,000 at auction because the Beatles once tinkled its ivories. The piano comes from studio three at Abbey Road, and was used by the Beatles when they worked on Paperback Writer in 1966. Eventually the piano was edited out of the released track, but it can be heard in outtakes. The auctioneers Bonhams says the piano was also used in 1969, when the track Old Brown Shoe was recorded. Bought by the studios in 1964, the piano was played by many other bands until it was retired in 1980

Politician demands McCartney apologise for Bush gag
An American politician is demanding Sir Paul McCartney publicly apologise for a joke he made at former President George W. Bush's expense during an appearance at the White House on Wednesday. Republican John Boehner was not amused when the former Beatle poked fun at the ex-leader's intellect as he became the first non-American to collect the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from Bush's successor, President Barack Obama. McCartney said, "After the last eight years, it's great to have a president who knows where the library is."

Temptations singer Ali-Ollie Woodson dies at 58
Ali-Ollie Woodson, who led the legendary Motown quintet The Temptations in the 1980s and '90s and helped restore them to their hit-making glory with songs including "Treat Her Like A Lady," has died, a friend said. He was 58. Woodson died Sunday in southern California after battling cancer, Motown Alumni Association President Billy Wilson said. Wilson said Woodson's wife, Juanita, told him about the death Sunday. Woodson was not an original member of the group, which had several lineup changes since it started in the 1960s. But he played an integral part in keeping the Temptations from becoming just nostalgia act.

US judge rules against LimeWire in music piracy case
A US judge has ruled in favor of 13 music companies in a copyright case against popular online file-sharing service LimeWire. Relying heavily on a Supreme Court judgement against song-swapping service Grokster, US District Court Judge Kimba Wood found LimeWire and its owner Mark Gorton liable for copyright infringement and unfair competition. "The evidence establishes that LimeWire users directly infringed plaintiffs' copyrights, and that LimeWire engaged in purposeful conduct intended to foster that infringement," Wood said in a 59-page ruling on Tuesday that was released on Wednesday. "Free distribution of the recordings through LimeWire competes with plaintiffs' sales of the recordings," Wood said. "Accordingly, the court grants plaintiffs' motion for summary judgment on their unfair competition claim against LimeWire," she said.

Eli "Paperboy" Reed : Come And Get It
"On his major label debut, Come and Get It, Eli Reed proves to be the life of a soulful, sweaty party in which everyone eventually gets dragged onto the dance floor. As a performer, Reed approaches each song with nothing less than utter conviction; he's as authentically gritty as he is ingratiatingly sexy. Reed incorporates the feel of classic R&B and soul into a largely self-penned, 12-song set, produced with Mike Elizondo, the bassist-turned-producer whose credits include, among others, Eminem, Pink, Gwen Stefani and Fiona Apple. Admirers have likened Reed to such luminaries as Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett; the Boston Herald called him "Boston's answer to Sam Cooke." But he's not merely trying to recreate a sound; Reed is channeling his influences and inspirations into making something all his own."

Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April. Record Store Day is currently managed by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Melanie Nipper, and Carrie Colliton

Music group EMI in dire straits - AP
Struggling music group EMI faces being taken over by its bankers after failing to clinch a deal to sell the North American distribution rights for its artists to Universal Music Group or Sony Music. EMI, which has the Beatles, Coldplay, Lily Allen and Pink Floyd on its books, had hoped to raise around 200 million pounds ($304 million) by offering its rivals a five-year licensing contract. A source close to both sets of talks, who requested anonymity because the discussions were private, said Thursday that they fell apart after a failure to agree on price. EMI declined to comment. The collapse of talks leaves EMI battling to raise 120 million pounds by mid-June to meet its commitments on loans from U.S. bank Citigroup.

Elton John concert to go ahead despite Mayan anger
Organizers said a concert by Elton John in the ruins of Chichen Itza would go ahead Saturday even after the stage collapsed injuring three workers and complaints from indigenous Mayans it was irreverent and out of place. Thursday's accident, caused by a collapsing 80-meter (262-foot) metal tower, left one worker with serious leg injuries. The announcement rankled local Mayan leaders and officials, who pointed out that perhaps the accident was the work of "aluxes," the Mayan culture's equivalent of fairies, who were upset because their gods' permission for the concert was lacking

Can UK music rule the world?
The UK could become the most powerful force in world music within the next decade. No, this isn't a prematurely posted April Fool's joke, sure to send the likes of Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Jay-Z giggling into their champagne. It's because an industry chief believes the top of the pile would be within our grasp if the government took more action and started working hand-in-hand with our recording artists. Feargal Sharkey, the former frontman of punk group The Undertones, is now chief executive of UK Music. He believes that by 2020, we could be producing more successful records than any other nation on earth. "We think we can be number one. We're not far off it," he explained.

Freegal Music Service
"In a significant step toward offering public library patrons DRM-free downloadable music, Library Ideas LLC, a new company that has previously hooked up libraries with Redbox video dispensers, has joined with Sony Music Entertainment to launch the Freegal Music Service, offering public library subscribers access to hundreds of thousands of songs in Sony's catalog. Sony includes more than 50 labels, in genres ranging from rock and country to rap and classical. The libraries must pre-pay for a minimum number of downloads from Freegal, and each library user will be limited to, at most, 20 downloads per week. Libraries that see a spike in use can limit the number of systemwide downloads in a week or month to ensure wider access, and library card holders can also reserve downloads"

I thought it was an era or genre, like New Jack Swing or something - I didn't know that if you weren't on Motown records, it wasn't Motown."

Jedward dropped by record label
"X Factor twins Jedward have been given the boot by their record label after their debut single failed to top the charts. John and Edward Grimes, 18, were signed to Sony after surviving several weeks on the X Factor, despite being ridiculed for their performances. The record deal was announced in January with the teenagers saying they were delighted to be "like our idols... living our dream". But their first song, Under Pressure, a duet with Vanilla Ice, was beaten to number one last month by US band Owl City and dropped out of the top 10 a week later. Jedward failed to top the charts despite benefiting from huge exposure performing the track with the 90s rapper at the National Television Awards. Louis Walsh, who decided to manage Jedward after they were voted out of the X Factor, confirmed they had been dropped by Sony and said he is talking to other labels." - Yahoo

Pink Floyd win EMI court battle over online sales
Pink Floyd have won a High Court battle to stop their record label EMI selling individual songs online. The rock legends, signed to EMI since 1967, said their contract meant their albums could not be split up without their permission. A judge agreed, saying the contract contained a clause to "preserve the artistic integrity of the albums". EMI has been ordered to pay £40,000 ($60,000) in costs, with a further fine to be decided. The group, whose latest contract was signed before download stores like iTunes appeared, also disputed the way royalties for digital sales were calculated

Music Theatre Online
"Music Theatre Online, based at the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities, is a digital archive of texts, images, video, and audio files relating to musical theater. The best printed editions of musical theater texts cannot fully provide the experience of simultaneous expression of verbal, musical, and terpsichorean languages so necessary to fully understand the art form. Using the multimedia capabilities of the modern web browser, we hope to create a better framework for studying these important works of drama"

Rapper Lil Wayne has been sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty in a New York City gun case
"The Grammy Award-winner was taken away in handcuffs to start serving his term immediately after his sentencing. He pleaded guilty in October to attempted criminal possession of a weapon and admitted having a loaded gun on his tour bus in 2007. He will serve his sentence in city jails, not a state prison, and could be released in about eight months with good behaviour. Lil Wayne was born Dwayne Carter and has been one of rap's most prolific and profitable figures in recent years. His sentencing was postponed last month so he could undergo surgery on his bejewelled teeth"

Story Tellers and Story Keepers: The Library of Congress and The Country Music Association Celebrate Country Music
"The Library of Congress and the Country Music Association (CMA) have announced a day-long program for the CMA Board of Directors at the nation's library, including a comprehensive tour of the historic Jefferson Building, an extensive orientation to the Library's music, sound recording, and folk collections focusing on Country Music, and a concert in the Coolidge Auditorium. The purpose is both to build on the Library's already unparalleled collections of sound recordings, moving image, and printed music collections with a more robust presence of the Country Music genre, and to further the Library's goal of maximizing access and awareness of its collections to music scholars and music lovers around the world. The day's activities are designed to lay the groundwork for future joint efforts that may include the acquisition and preservation of Country Music collections, online presentations, and educational outreach. "The genre of Country Music could not be better suited to the Library's mission of acquiring, preserving, and providing access to America’s culture and stories," said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. "Country Music is a record of American history and America's stories. I cannot think of a more appropriate collaboration than to expand the presence of Country Music and its reflection of the American experience to the global users of this historic and unrivaled collection," said Steve Moore, Chairman of the CMA Board of Directors"

Bernard Coutaz, founder of Classical Music label, dies at 87
"Bernard Coutaz, who founded the respected independent classical record label Harmonia Mundi and ran it for five decades, died on Friday. He was 87 and lived in the southern French city of Arles. The cause was a heart attack, said Jean-Marc Berns, the head of Harmonia Mundi's press service, on Monday. Harmonia Mundi works on a regular basis with about 40 artists, among them the Belgian conductors René Jacobs and Philippe Herreweghe, the French pianist Alain Planès, the German baritone Matthias Goerne and the German countertenor Andreas Scholl. Mr. Coutaz, who founded the label in 1958, remained attached to albums, eschewing digital music and making a point of reinvesting the company's profits into production. The company's shareholders do not earn dividends. Eva Coutaz, his wife, will replace him as the head of the music label, which is based in Arles and employs around 330 people around the world, the company said"

Simon denies Geffen was so vain
Carly Simon has laughed off reports record label boss David Geffen is the man who inspired her hit You're So Vain - branding the assumptions a "funny mistake". Simon finally agreed to end nearly 40 years of speculation, by revealing the subject of her iconic 1972 track with a cryptic clue in an acoustic version of You're So Vain on her latest album, Never Been Gone. It has long been thought the song is about one of Simon's famous ex-lovers, which have included Hollywood legend Warren Beatty and rocker Mick Jagger. Reporters at U.K. newspaper The Sun were adamant they had solved the mystery - insisting Simon whispers Geffen's name in the song. But the singer has denied she based the track on her former boss - insisting she hadn't even met the gay star when she wrote it in 1971. In an email to showbiz411.com, she writes, "What a riot! Nothing to do with David Geffen! What a funny mistake! Someone got a clue mistaken for another mistake! How can this guessing game stop without a lie?"
