Louie Bellson dies at 84
"Louie Bellson, a jazz drummer and bandleader who combined remarkable instrumental virtuosity with far-ranging compositional skills, has died. He was 84. According to his wife, Francine, Bellson died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles of complications of Parkinson's disease following a broken hip in November. Bellson's long, productive career stretched from his teens -- when, in competition with 40,000 other young players, he won the Slingerland National Gene Krupa drumming contest -- to the tours and seminars he continued until 2008. Best known as a superlative big band drummer as a result of his work in the 1940s and '50s with Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Harry James, Duke Ellington and others, Bellson was also an adept small group player. His more than 200 recorded appearances as leader and sideman encompass sessions with Jazz at the Philharmonic, Woody Herman, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, James Brown and dozens of others, including Ellington's Big Four alongside guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Ray Brown. - LA TimesTechnorati Tag: Music

Record labels make ISPs ‘copyright cops’ for piracy
"The world's biggest record companies sued college students, a 12-year-old girl and a dead woman and still failed to stamp out music piracy. Now they’re turning to internet service providers (ISP). Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group Corp., EMI Group and Sony Music Entertainment have gained leverage through court and government actions to pressure ISPs into warning customers not to steal music - in some cases with a threat to cut service" - BusinessMirror

US Mint unveils DC quarter showing Duke Ellington
The nation's capital now has its own quarter. The U.S. Mint on Monday released the coin featuring Washington native and jazz great Duke Ellington at his piano. It also has an inscription of the city's motto, "Justice for All." Collectors can go online or to banks to buy two-roll sets and bags of up to 1,000 quarters. D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton says officials are planning an event to celebrate the coin later this month. Last year, the U.S. Mint rejected designs that included the slogan "Taxation Without Representation." That refers to the long-running gripe that D.C. residents pay federal taxes without full representation in Congress. The Mint's state quarter program finished in November with Hawaii and is moving on to U.S. territories - YahooTechnorati Tag: Music

The singer continued playing gigs with his band - Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich - until near to the end of his life, record plugger Sean Cooney said. "He didn't let it get him down. He was defying it," Mr Cooney added. The group had eight top 10 hits, including a UK number one single in 1968 with The Legend of Xanadu, in which Dee famously cracked a whip. Atlantic Records posts more digital sales than CDs
"Late last week, one of the largest music labels announced that its sales of digital files exceeded the revenue generated by CDs. As reported in the New York Times, Altantic Records saw 51% of its sales generated by digital sales. This was significantly more than Atlantic's parent company, Warner Music Group, which reported only 27% of its total sales from digital distribution. It should come as no surprise that digital music is quickly replacing physical media. One need only think of the weight and mess of thousands of CDs, versus a nearly unlimited amount on an iPod or streaming on demand. The question is when will other media follow? Some magazines are slowly getting rid of print in favor of online. It will be some time before display technology exceeds the user experience of print on paper. In some ways scholarly journal publishing is already headed down this path. The rest of publishing is slower to adapt. However, several tipping points will likely be reached fairly soon" - NISO blog

New music service will help fight Aids
Sir Elton John, Jay-Z and other leading artists have teamed up to offer world exclusive songs through a new music service to help fight Aids in Africa. Red Wire will act as a digital magazine, delivering news and music to members' desktops while donating half the GBP4 monthly fee to fund work alleviating the effects of the disease. It has been set up by Red, the project established by Bono and others to engage the private sector in raising awareness and help finance Aids programmes. To mark World Aids Day, music lovers will be able to view performances from U2, Coldplay, John Legend, Dixie Chicks, the Police, Elvis Costello and Sheryl Crow by logging on to red.msn.com later. Other performances include The Killers and Sir Elton's Christmas song Joseph, which is being released exclusive to Red Wire two weeks before its official release date. Half of each month's membership fee will go directly to the Global Fund set up to help buy life-saving medicines and other services for people living with HIV and Aids in Africa. Don MacKinnon, founder of Hear Music and former vice president of Music & Entertainment of Starbucks, is one of the men behind the new venture. He said: "Every week, when you receive this great music, you will know you are helping people in Africa get the medicine they need. It is that simple." U2 frontman, Bono, who is also a co-founder of Red, said: "Don MacKinnon just might be the penicillin the ailing music needs. He is an innovator by nature and I have no doubt that some of the music software we are working on at Red will help change the way music is received and change the lives of Africans who will die without Aids drugs that red can help provide."

Labels up volume on vinyl releases to meet demand
It may have seemed like a fad at first, but the resurgence of vinyl is now turning into a nice niche business for the major labels. With EMI's announcement that it would reissue eight classic albums in the format, all four majors are now onboard the vinyl bandwagon. EMI will release two Coldplay albums, four Radiohead titles and Steve Miller's "Greatest Hits" on August 19.
