Jury rules against Minnesota woman in download case (USA)

"A replay of the nation's only file-sharing case to go to trial has ended with the same result - a Minnesota woman was found to have violated music copyrights and must pay huge damages to the recording industry. A federal jury ruled Thursday that Jammie Thomas-Rasset willfully violated the copyrights on 24 songs, and awarded recording companies $1.92 million, or $80,000 per song. Thomas-Rasset's second trial actually turned out worse for her. When a different federal jury heard her case in 2007, it hit Thomas-Rasset with a $222,000 judgment. The new trial was ordered after the judge in the case decided he had erred in giving jury instructions" - Yahoo

Warner Music hooks up again with Imeem

"Weeks after writing off its Imeem investment, Warner Music Group has once again thrown in with the video- and music-focused social network, a source confirmed on Monday. Only this time, Warner doesn't have to dip into its wallet to acquire an even larger interest in the start-up, according to a story by Peter Kafka at All Things Digital, who broke the news. What the third largest recording company has agreed to give up for the stake is to rip up the old licensing contract and create a new one that asks for less money each quarter, according to Kafka. My source, who is familiar with the deal, confirmed this." - cnet

Vinyl sales to hit another high point in 2009

"The resurgent vinyl market isn't showing any signs of slowing down. In fact, recent figures released by Nielsen SoundScan indicate that overall U.S. vinyl sales will once again set a benchmark in 2009, with sales up 50% through the first five months of the year. SoundScan predicts vinyl sales will reach 2.8 million units in 2009, up from 1.9 million in 2008, a record since SoundScan began tracking sales data in 1991. Already in 2009, vinyl sales have topped 1 million. At this point last year, vinyl sales stood at 701,000 copies. To be fair, the number is still tiny compared to overall album sales" - LA Times

"British cable TV operator Virgin Media is to launch an unlimited music download subscription service through a partnership with the world's largest music company, Universal. The music industry has been desperate to boost digital sales in recent years to overcome online piracy, and the agreement comes a day before a British report sets out how the creative and telecoms industries should tackle the problem. People familiar with the service said it would cost 10-15 pounds ($16.30-$24.50) per month, which could appeal to parents concerned by children accessing illegal sites" - Yahoo

Is YouTube the new MTV?

The video-sharing Web site YouTube is probably best known as the place to find silly home videos of klutzy cats, clever babies and lip-syncing soccer moms. But YouTube is becoming increasingly important to the music business. In fact, some industry professionals say it has become the MTV of the digital generation. In the old days, new bands created buzz by playing clubs and getting on local radio. Today, record labels often gauge a new band's popularity by looking on YouTube. Jeff Dodes, head of multimedia for a division of Sony Music, says that's where one of his talent scouts saw the video for the song "The Stanky Leg," by The GS Boyz. "The Stanky Leg" had created so much excitement on YouTube that Sony decided to sign The GS Boyz. And Dodes says that when the group makes its record for the label, he'll take The GS Boyz back to YouTube to promote it - NPR
