Singer-songwriter-producer Delaney Bramlett, who penned such classic rock songs as "Let it Rain" and worked with musicians George Harrison and Eric Clapton, has died. He was 69. Bramlett died early Saturday at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles as a result of complications from gallbladder surgery, his wife Susan Lanier-Bramlett said.

Atlantic Records posts more digital sales than CDs
"Late last week, one of the largest music labels announced that its sales of digital files exceeded the revenue generated by CDs. As reported in the New York Times, Altantic Records saw 51% of its sales generated by digital sales. This was significantly more than Atlantic's parent company, Warner Music Group, which reported only 27% of its total sales from digital distribution. It should come as no surprise that digital music is quickly replacing physical media. One need only think of the weight and mess of thousands of CDs, versus a nearly unlimited amount on an iPod or streaming on demand. The question is when will other media follow? Some magazines are slowly getting rid of print in favor of online. It will be some time before display technology exceeds the user experience of print on paper. In some ways scholarly journal publishing is already headed down this path. The rest of publishing is slower to adapt. However, several tipping points will likely be reached fairly soon" - NISO blog

New music service will help fight Aids
Sir Elton John, Jay-Z and other leading artists have teamed up to offer world exclusive songs through a new music service to help fight Aids in Africa. Red Wire will act as a digital magazine, delivering news and music to members' desktops while donating half the GBP4 monthly fee to fund work alleviating the effects of the disease. It has been set up by Red, the project established by Bono and others to engage the private sector in raising awareness and help finance Aids programmes. To mark World Aids Day, music lovers will be able to view performances from U2, Coldplay, John Legend, Dixie Chicks, the Police, Elvis Costello and Sheryl Crow by logging on to red.msn.com later. Other performances include The Killers and Sir Elton's Christmas song Joseph, which is being released exclusive to Red Wire two weeks before its official release date. Half of each month's membership fee will go directly to the Global Fund set up to help buy life-saving medicines and other services for people living with HIV and Aids in Africa. Don MacKinnon, founder of Hear Music and former vice president of Music & Entertainment of Starbucks, is one of the men behind the new venture. He said: "Every week, when you receive this great music, you will know you are helping people in Africa get the medicine they need. It is that simple." U2 frontman, Bono, who is also a co-founder of Red, said: "Don MacKinnon just might be the penicillin the ailing music needs. He is an innovator by nature and I have no doubt that some of the music software we are working on at Red will help change the way music is received and change the lives of Africans who will die without Aids drugs that red can help provide."

Labels up volume on vinyl releases to meet demand
It may have seemed like a fad at first, but the resurgence of vinyl is now turning into a nice niche business for the major labels. With EMI's announcement that it would reissue eight classic albums in the format, all four majors are now onboard the vinyl bandwagon. EMI will release two Coldplay albums, four Radiohead titles and Steve Miller's "Greatest Hits" on August 19. Universal Music Enterprises will release 20 albums on vinyl this month and an additional 20 at the end of August, while Warner Music Group will issue 24 to 30 albums from its catalog and 10 to 12 new releases from September through the end of the year, according to executives at those companies - Yahoo

Sheila Weller: Girls Like Us
Sheila Weller: Girls Like Us - Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late 1960s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation -- female version -- but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliché. The history of the women of that generation has never been written -- until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs. Filled with the voices of many dozens of these women's intimates, who are speaking in these pages for the first time, this alternating biography reads like a novel -- except it's all true, and the heroines are famous and beloved. Sheila Weller captures the character of each woman and gives a balanced portrayal enriched by a wealth of new information

Oxford Music Online
Oxford Music Online is an innovative new gateway that offers users the ability, for the first time ever, to access and cross-search the vast resources of Oxford's music reference in one location. Now available at Oxford Music Online is Colin Larkin's landmark Encyclopedia of Popular Music - online for the first time by popular demand. The most comprehensive reference work devoted exclusively to popular music, the Encyclopedia is the authoritative biographical encyclopedia of rock, pop, and jazz artists, covering popular music from 1900 to the present. It is exhaustive, meticulous, authoritative — and incredibly fun to read.
Coming in early 2008 is a complete redesign of Grove Music Online that includes not only functional updates and enhancements, but also the addition of substantial new Oxford reference content.
Later in 2008, Richard Taruskin's The Oxford History of Western Music will be offered through Oxford Music Online for a one-time purchase fee. This outstanding resource sets the details of music, the chronological sweep of figures, works, and musical ideas, within the larger context of world affairs and cultural history

LastFm frees the Music
As of today, you can play full-length tracks and entire albums for free on the Last.fm website.
Something we’ve wanted for years—for people who visit Last.fm to be able to play any track for free—is now possible. With the support of the folks behind EMI, Sony BMG, Universal and Warner—and the artists they work with—plus thousands of independent artists and labels, we’ve made the biggest legal collection of music available to play online for free, the way we believe it should be. Full-length tracks are now available in the US, UK, and Germany, and we're hard at work broadening our coverage into other countries. During this initial public beta period, each track can be played up to 3 times for free before a notice appears telling you about our upcoming subscription service. The soon-to-be announced subscription service will give you unlimited plays and some other useful things. We're also working on bringing full-length tracks to the desktop client and beyond.
