Rapper 2Pac keeps Crazy Chick from top of chart

Teenage Welsh soprano Charlotte Church's first pop single "Crazy Chick" has been restricted to second place in Britain's charts after American rapper 2Pac retained the top spot for the second week. 2Pac's "Ghetto Gospel", released almost nine years after he died in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles, features a sample of Elton John's 1971 track "Indian Summer" and is his first UK number one

Simon Waronker

In 1955 Simon Waronker, who has died aged 90, had spent 16 years as Twentieth Century Fox's orchestral contractor, organising the studio's music. It was then that his cousin, Decca Record's Herb Newman, proposed that they launch a record label. Waronker finally decided that he would do so - even if, by then, Herb had set up his own label. The result from Waronker, after a banking neighbour had accepted his furniture as collateral, was Liberty Records

New film on music and health care

Rock A Mole Productions of Los Angeles has released Everybody In, Nobody Out, a new film on musicians and health care. It's just seven minutes long but it packs quite a wallop. It will be sent free on VHS to any musician or music writer who requests it. For more information, contact rockrap@aol.com or RRC, Box 341305, LA, CA 90034.

"What does it say about the richest country on earth that its citizens must depend upon raffles and spaghetti dinners to pay the medical bills--a situation that exists in no other civilized country? What does it say about members of Congress and presidents, Democrats and Republicans all, who are content with a health care system that ignores the needs of tens of millions of Americans while it makes multimillionaires out of those who profit from disease and death?"--from Critical Condition by Donald L. Bartlett and James B. Steele
