Les Paul 1915-2009

Tribute is being paid to Les Paul, who died aged 94, by musicians around the world, with guitarist Joe Satriani calling him 'the original guitar hero' and Brian Wilson crediting him with inventing the Beach Boys sound. Paul was a musician, playing 'hillbilly' and Jazz from his teens until his 90s, and inventor - one of the pioneers of the solid body electric guitar and credited with the invention (or discovery) of overdubbing, tape delay, phasing effects, and multitrack recording. His most iconic legacy, is of course, the Gibson Les Paul.

"The string quartet, for two violins, viola and violoncello, was one of the most widely-cultivated genres of chamber music during the Classical period, with the Viennese masters Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven all contributing substantially to the literature. The Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University has about forty collections of string quartets in parts dating from this time (about 1770-1840), most, though not all complete, and representing composers whose works are rarely found in modern editions. Digitization of these parts makes newly available for performance, study and recording a large and varied repertoire of works for this instrumental ensemble"

"Sam Cooke's music and life will take center stage this weekend in Clarksdale. The Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival pays tribute to Cooke, beginning Friday. The weekend event includes an unveiling of a blues marker at the Roxy Theater and roundtable discussion on Cooke's life at the Ground Zero blues club. Many of the local performers at the festival will sing at least one of Cooke's hits, whether it's from his early gospel career with the Soul Stirrers or from his repertoire of pop music, including the mainstays "You Send Me" and "A Change is Gonna Come." 1 dead, 15 injured in Canada stage collapse

"One person was killed and at least 15 were injured after a storm whipped through an outdoor country music festival, causing a stage to collapse. Strong winds and heavy rain began hitting the Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose, east of Edmonton, around 6 p.m. Saturday, said Camrose Police Chief Darrell Kambeitz. He confirmed the one death and said all 15 injured were taken to hospitals. "The concert at Big Valley Jamboree was delayed and the concert bowl was being cleared when a small portion of the main stage collapsed," Kambeitz told The Canadian Press. He said reports of dozens of people being trapped at the site weren't true." - AP
