European recording artists and performers call for fairness on term of protection

"Europe has always prided itself on being a champion of culture, yet the EU is lagging behind many other parts of the world when it comes to protecting its recordings. European artists, performers and producers are provided with a 50 year period of protection for their work to enable them to benefit from the recordings they have made. This is a much lower level of protection than many other countries around the world which provide for between 60 and 95 years' protection. At a time when the creative sector based on intellectual property generates an increasing percentage of GDP in the European Union, this lower level of protection compared to other international markets puts Europe at a competitive disadvantage."

Susan Boyle's performance viewed over 66 million times in one week

"#Susan Boyle is headed for the history books. The online video of Boyle's performance in the reality show "Britain's Got Talent" has set the record for the number of views in a week - and shows no sign of stopping. According to Visible Measures, which tracks videos from YouTube, MySpace and other video-sharing sites, Boyle's audition has generated 66.3 million views. On YouTube alone, it's been viewed more than 30 million times. The 7-minute video that was posted on YouTube last Saturday and then widely circulated online easily eclipsed more high-profile videos that have been around for months. Tina Fey's impersonation of Sarah Palin has clocked in 34.2 million views, said the folks at Visible Measures, while President Obama's victory speech on election night has generated 18.5 million views. In less than a week, Boyle topped them." - Washington Post

Songs soothe symptoms in heart disease patients

"If you have heart problems, you might want to plug in that iPod or pop in a CD of mellow songs. Hospital patients with coronary heart disease reduced their heart rates, breathing rate and blood pressure just by listening to #music, a Temple University review of 23 previous studies found. The report, published in the latest issue of The Cochrane Library, found that the soothing effects were greatest when these patients chose their own tunes. For example, patients' pulse rates fell by more beats per minute when they made the selections compared with those who listened to music selected by researchers." - USA Today

With economy stalling, more see used books, music as resources

"As the economic downturn lingers, people are turning to used book stores -- sellers as well as buyers. At Logos Books & Records in downtown Santa Cruz, #music buyer Warner Williams has seen people bring in entire collections to sell. Bookshop Santa Cruz has seen a dramatic increase in people selling and a new preference for cash over store credit, according to owner Casey Coonerty Protti. In Aptos, Bookworks co-owner Traci Fishburn reports "dipping our toes" into the used book market, prompted by donations by longtime patrons after the shop downsized in fall 2007. "Inexpensive entertainment, yet high quality," summed up Debbie Shayne, manager at Logos, which employs 25 to 30 people and has an inventory of 150,000 to 200,000 used books spread over two floors." - San Jose Mercury News

"Fast & Furious" puts accent on Latin music

""Fast & Furious," set in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and East Los Angeles, is not the first mainstream movie to use Latin settings. But it is the first in recent memory to prominently feature Latin #music on its soundtrack. "It's not a Latin-themed movie," says Universal Pictures president of film music Kathy Nelson. "It's car racing and drugs. That could be anything. But we wanted the soundtrack album to be Latin." The soundtrack includes six Latin-tinged tracks, including reggaeton artist Don Omar's "Virtual Diva" and the theme "Blanco," performed in English and Spanish by Pitbull featuring Pharrell." - Reuters
