Paul McCartney named recipient of Third Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington today named music legend Paul McCartney as the recipient of the third Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. An all-star tribute concert is planned for spring 2010. "As a great admirer of the Gershwins’ songs, I am highly honored to be given the Gershwin Prize by such a great institution as the Library of Congress," McCartney said. The prize commemorates George and Ira Gershwin, the legendary American songwriting team whose extensive manuscript collections reside in the Library of Congress. The prize is awarded to musicians whose lifetime contributions in the field of popular song exemplify the standard of excellence associated with the Gershwins. The Gershwin Prize is also meant to draw attention to the musical collections in the Library of Congress, especially the vast popular-music collection, and to encourage students, teachers, scholars and researchers to use this free public resource in their scholarly investigations.

Universal / TuneCore's Indie Project

"The road to indie artist fame and fortune got a fast lane this week with the launch of four new Web sites designed to aid up-and-coming artists distribute their music as well as attract the attention of recording industry players. The new sites are the latest developments resulting from the relationship between major label Universal Music Group and music distributor TuneCore, which distributes, for a fee, indie artists' music to online music services. The sites - UniMoDigitalDistribution.com, InterscopeDigitalDistribution.com, Republicdd.com and IDJFirstLook.com - have similar functions in that they enable new artists, through TuneCore, to distribute their music to online stores such as iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon MP3, Shockhound, eMusic and Napster." - Pollstar

Officials to restore birthplace of Robert Johnson

Officials to restore birthplace of Robert JohnsonThe mystery surrounding bluesman Robert Johnson's life and death feeds the lingering fascination with his work. There's the myth he sold his soul to the devil to create his haunting guitar intonations. There's the dispute over where he died after his alleged poisoning by a jealous man in 1938. Three different markers claim to be the site of his demise. His birthplace, however, has been verified. The seminal bluesman came into the world in 1911 in a well-crafted home built by his stepfather in the Mississippi town of Hazlehurst. Now, 71 years after his death, local officials want to restore the home in hopes of drawing Johnson fans and their tourism dollars to Copiah County, about 100 miles from the Delta region that most bluesmen called home

Illegal downloaders 'spend the most on music', says poll (UK)

"People who illegally download music from the internet also spend more money on music than anyone else, according to a new study. The survey, published today, found that those who admit illegally downloading music spent an average of £77 a year on music – £33 more than those who claim that they never download music dishonestly. The findings suggest that plans by the Secretary of State for Business, Peter Mandelson, to crack down on illegal downloaders by threatening to cut their internet connections with a "three strikes and you're out" rule could harm the music industry by punishing its core customers. An estimated seven million UK users download files illegally every year. The record industry's trade association, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), believes this copyright infringement will cost the industry £200m this year. The poll, which surveyed 1,000 16- to 50-year-olds with internet access, found that one in 10 people admit to downloading music illegally"

Making search more musical - Official Google Blog

Making search more musical - Official Google Blog: "Every day we get millions of search queries about music. You want to know more about your favorite artists, find that new album or iconic song or figure out the name of that tune stuck in your head. In fact, according to Insights for Search, two of the top 10 queries in the U.S. are music-related. But often, if your answer is in a song, it can take a while to get there. We call this "time to result" - and we're always looking for ways to reduce it. Today, we're rolling out a search feature that does just that by enabling you to search and more easily discover millions of songs, all via a simple Google web search. If you're searching for music, "time to result" is really "time to music." Now, when you enter a music-related query - like the name of a song, artist or album - your search results will include links to an audio preview of those songs provided by our music search partners MySpace (which just acquired iLike) or Lala. When you click the result you'll be able to listen to an audio preview of the song directly from one of those partners" Google says the music search features will be rolling out 'gradually to users across the U.S. over the next day.'

Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present

Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the PresentWho Shot Rock & Roll is the first major museum exhibition on rock and roll to put photographers in the foreground, acknowledging their creative and collaborative role in the history of rock music. From its earliest days, rock and roll was captured in photographs that personalized, and frequently eroticized, the musicians, creating a visual identity for the genre. The photographers were handmaidens to the rock-and-roll revolution, and their images communicate the social and cultural transformations that rock has fostered since the1950s. The exhibition is in six sections: rare and revealing images taken behind the scenes; tender snapshots of young musicians at the beginnings of their careers; exhilarating photographs of live performances that display the energy, passion, style, and sex appeal of the band on stage; powerful images of the crowds and fans that are often evocative of historic paintings; portraits revealing the soul and creativity, rather than the surface and celebrity, of the musicians; and conceptual images and album covers highlighting the collaborative efforts between the image makers and the musicians. Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present is organized by the Brooklyn Museum with guest curator Gail Buckland. October 30, 2009-January 31, 2010

Lucy of 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' fame dies

Lucy Vodden, who provided the inspiration for the Beatles' classic song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," has died after a long battle with lupus. She was 46. Her death was announced Monday by St. Thomas' Hospital in London, where she had been treated for the chronic disease for more than five years, and by her husband, Ross Vodden. Britain's Press Association said she died last Tuesday. Hospital officials said they could not confirm the day of her death. Vodden's connection to the Beatles dates back to her early days, when she made friends with schoolmate Julian Lennon, John Lennon's son. Julian Lennon, then 4 years old, came home from school with a drawing one day, showed it to his father, and said it was "Lucy in the sky with diamonds."

You Really Got Me, Bobby Graham: In Memory

"Forty-five years ago in September 1964, the Kinks 'You Really Got Me' stormed to the top of British charts and would soon accomplish the same on Billboard's American rankings. The raucous guitar and explosive drums declared a new era of pop and an aggressive voice for rock. Indeed, in that juxtaposition of angry instruments and whining voice can be heard the beginnings of punk. With this recording and many others, Bobby Graham offers the example of a musician many have heard, but too few have heard of"

Rolling Stones deny Watts's departure

Rolling Stones deny Watts's departure"The Rolling Stones issued a terse statement Wednesday denying an online report that drummer Charlie Watts had quit the band. "Contrary to a fabricated story that ran this morning on a small music website in Australia, drummer Charlie Watts has not left the Rolling Stones," the band said in a statement. Australian music and entertainment website undercover.au.com stirred a worldwide panic online early Wednesday with its report that Watts was leaving the band and would likely be replaced by Charlie Drayton, the drummer who has played with Stones bandmate Keith Richards in his side project, the Expensive Winos. The report, which quickly spread via music websites and microblogging service Twitter, quoted an unnamed source in the band's inner circle and said that Watts "will never record or tour with the band again." Watts, 68, joined the Rolling Stones in 1963, the year after the band was first established by Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Watts, renowned for his jazz drumming style, has also pursued solo music projects, including releasing the 2004 album Watts at Scott's. That same year, Watts was also diagnosed with and underwent treatment for throat cancer, which is now in remission. The Rolling Stones released their latest album, A Bigger Bang, in 2005 and completed their most recent world tour in 2007." - Reuters

The Beatles Stereo Box Set - September 9, 2009

You still can't buy "Can't Buy Me Love" from iTunes. But the Beatles' music is taking a step toward catching up with technology. After four years of audio engineers working from Abbey Road Studios in London with the original Beatles recording tapes, on September 9, Apple Corps Ltd. and EMI Music are debuting the digitally remastered Beatles' studio-produced albums. All told, 29 CDs, in one of two box sets will go on sale. They "have the integrity of the original master tape, they're just phonically superior" to previously released recordings, says Kevin Howlett, a radio producer who consulted on the project. Diehard Beatles fans have been complaining about the lackluster quality of Beatles CDs since they were released 22 years ago, with one reviewer calling the audio "tinny and desperately malnourished."

Chris Connor dies

Chris Connor, the great jazz singer whose lush, foggy voice and compressed emotional intensity distilled a 1950s jazz reverie of faraway longing in a sad cafe, died Saturday in Toms River, N.J. She was 81 and lived in Toms River. The cause was cancer, her publicist, Alan Eichler, said. A singer who used little vibrato and was admired for her inventive rhythmic alterations of ballads, she belonged to the cool school of jazz singers that included Anita O'Day, June Christy, Chet Baker and Julie London - SFGate
