AllofMP3 shut down, MP3sparks opens
AllofMP3 is a Russian web service that sells digital music at very low prices without any copy protection. As of July 2, AllofMP3.com has been shut down, reportedly by the Russian government. A new site, very similar to AllOfMP3 and also owned by Media Services, launched simultaneous with the shutdown. MP3Sparks looks to be a clone of AllOfMP3 in all but name.

1,683 guitarists play 'Smoke on Water'
More than 1,680 guitar players turned out, tuned up and took part in what organizers say was a world record rendition of Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water - a song that was the first many of them ever learned. Some came from as far away as California and Germany on Sunday to take part in a Kansas City radio station's effort to break a Guinness world record for the most people playing the same song simultaneously. The record had been 1,323 people playing the same song in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1994

CBS Corporation has acquired Last.fm, a global, community-based, music discovery network. CBS purchased the property for $280 million in cash. Last.fm currently has more than 15 million active users in more than 200 countries. Jazzman Andrew Hill, a groundbreaking pianist and composer known for his complex post-bop style, died early Friday, his record label announced. He was 75. Hill, who had been diagnosed with lung cancer three years ago, died at his Jersey City, N.J., home, according to Cem Kurosman of Blue Note Records. He had released his final album, "Time Lines," in early 2006, a farewell that earned him album of the year honors from Down Beat magazine

Record label EMI has launched a lawsuit against a cleaning firm for allegedly disposing of GBP700,000 worth of rare Beatles photographs.
