Juanes launching label with Universal Music
Colombian rock star Juanes is launching a new record label in partnership with Universal Music. 4Js is a joint venture between Juanes and Universal Music Mexico. The label will be distributed worldwide by Universal Music. 4Js has four Colombian acts signed to its roster and plans to officially launch in the first quarter with a release by iconic folk singer/songwriter Octavio Mesa. Like Surco, the joint venture between Universal and producers Gustavo Santaolalla and Anibal Kerpel (to which Juanes is signed), 4Js will not be a stand-alone label but more of an A&R and production entity. Headed by Juanes, the label will focus on pinpointing talent from Colombia and the world

U.K. pop charts set for radical overhaul
The British pop chart will undergo one of the biggest shake-ups since its inception 54 years ago on Sunday when any song downloaded from the Internet will be able to compete for the number one single spot. Up to now, only songs which were physically available for purchase in shops counted toward the weekly chart. Downloads could be included, but only a week before an actual CD single went on sale and for two weeks after it stopped appearing in stores

Label supports record shop campaign
The oldest record label in the world is backing a campaign to save the world's oldest record shop from closure. Spillers Records, in Cardiff, which sold the first wax phonograph cylinders when it was founded in 1894, has already attracted support from rock bands including the Manic Street Preachers. The band's frontman James Dean Bradfield still shops at the store, and he and bass player Nicky Wire used to busk outside before they became famous. Now the band's record label, Columbia Records, has added its weight to the campaign

Mozart piano score discovered in Salzburg
A hitherto unknown piano score extremely likely to be by the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has been discovered in the composer's birthplace Salzburg, Austrian broadcaster ORF said. The score's facsimile will be officially presented and played by clavichordist Florian Birsak on Friday, it said

Soul star James Brown dies at 73
Singer James Brown, known as the "Godfather of Soul", has died at the age of 73, his agent has said. He was admitted to hospital in Atlanta after being diagnosed with severe pneumonia but died at 0145 local time (0645 GMT), said Frank Copsidas. The star was famous for hits including I Got You (I Feel Good), Papa's Got a Brand New Bag and Living in America

Denis Payton of UK band The Dave Clark Five dies
Denis Payton, from rock group The Dave Clark Five which toured the United States in the 1960s and spearheaded the "great British invasion" alongside the Beatles, has died after a long illness aged 63. Friends and relatives said in a statement that Payton, who played the saxophone, guitar and harmonica and sang backing vocals, died on Sunday. "He had an amazing philosophy on life and will be greatly missed by me and all who knew him," said Dave Clark, one of the group's founding members. "Denis was extremely brave and not afraid of death."

49th GRAMMY Nominees Announced
Nominations for the 49th Annual GRAMMY Awards were announced today by The Recording Academy, reflecting a year in which multiple genres were represented in top categories, new up-and-comers were nominated alongside established artists and a diverse array of producers and other creative professionals garnered multiple nominations. The 49th Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on "GRAMMY Sunday," February 11, at Staples Center in Los Angeles and once again will be broadcast live in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS from 8 – 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT)
Copyright pirates face crackdown
Copyright criminals must face far tougher regulation to protect the entertainment industry, a report says. The Gowers Report was commissioned by the government to look at modernising UK copyright laws for the digital age. While it proposes new powers against copyright infringement, it also says private users should be allowed to copy music from a CD to their MP3 player. CSO returns to radio, gets own record label
After more than five years, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra will return to the national radio airwaves early next year as part of a comprehensive new media agreement that includes the launch of a new in-house recording label for compact discs and digital downloads, it was announced Thursday. The agreement by the CSO Association, the Chicago Federation of Musicians and the WFMT Radio Network is made possible by a three-year, $3.4 million gift from the petroleum company BP. Local and national broadcasts of in-concert performances by the CSO will resume in March as part of a 52-week series called the BP Chicago Symphony Orchestra Radio Broadcasts, produced by WFMT-FM 98.7 and syndicated by the WFMT network
